Nuclear energy: OECD’s Gurría highlights potential, warns of challenges

Opening an international conference to discuss the peaceful and responsible development of nuclear energy, A. Gurría said "We are currently seeing a renaissance of the nuclear option, for reasons that are clear to see and primarily to allow us to meet the challenge of climate change". The conference, held at the OECD, was organised by the French government in co-ordination with the IAEA and with the support of the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency.
G20 - OECD, WTO and UNCTAD renew calls to resist protectionism

The OECD, World Trade Organization and the UN’s Conference on Trade and Development have called on the leaders of the G20 countries to resist protectionism or the prospects for economic recovery may be wiped out.
Statistics - Unemployment rate falls to 8.7% in January, driven by US and Japan

The unemployment rate for the OECD area fell slightly to 8.7% in January 2010, reflecting drops of 0.3 percentage points in the United States and Japan.

Statistics - Composite leading indicators continue to signal expansion in economic activity

OECD composite leading indicators (CLIs) in January 2010 continue to signal an improvement in economic activity for the G7 countries although only marginally more so than in the assessment for December.
Bribery - OECD calls on businesses to step up their fight

Companies should put in place strict internal controls and establish ethics and compliance programmes as part of a strategy to combat bribery in international business deals, according to a new guidance agreed by the 38 countries that are party to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.
Statistics - Higher energy prices push annual inflation in OECD area up to 2.1%

An annual increase of 10.6% in energy prices pushed overall inflation up to 2.1% in the OECD area in the year to January 2010, compared with 1.9% in December 2009. Energy prices rose by 19.1% in the United States.
Chile - OECD’s Secretary-General sends condolences

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría expressed sympathy and solidarity with the people of Chile in the wake of the tragic effects of the earthquake. Offering assistance to the citizens and government of Chile, Mr. Gurría said: “Our hearts and minds are with Chileans in these difficult circumstances.”
