The World Food Program (WFP) will continue efforts geared at boosting agricultural production in Rwanda, the organisation’s Executive Director, Josette Sheeran said, yesterday. Sheeran made the remarks whilre inspecting 300 hectares of wheat farms planted on the terraced hills of Rukozo and Cyungo sectors in Rulindo District.

If the time and energy spent on political unrest is devoted to solving real problems of poverty and food crisis, the population might not be as hungrier as they are right now. “Due to a greater focus on politics, the real and pressing concerns get lost somewhere in the middle. The politicians and government are not focusing on the food security as much as they need to. It is easier to ignore and overlook how the people in the rural hinterlands are living,” said Richard Ragan, country director of the United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) at a photo exhibition organised by WFP, showcasing the food rituals of Nepal.
Women food-woe fighters

Women can help reduce the rising food insecurity triggered by low agricultural production and price rise. Participants at a function organised by World Food Programme (WFP) here on Friday concluded this, saying that hunger is directly linked to gender inequality. “Like men, if women are trained to enhance their skills in agriculture sector, it is likely that food production will rise by 22 percent,” said Dominique Hyde, WFP’s deputy country director.

UN supporting efforts to help victims of Pakistani floods

The United Nations is sending relief supplies to help victims in Pakistan of heavy floods, which are the worst that some parts of the Asian nation have seen in more than eight decades. (..) The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are providing tents and other items, while the UN World Health Organization (WHO) is coordinating with the Government to provide medicine. For its part, the World Food Programme (WFP) is ready to provide food if needed.

Feeding over 300,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern Yemen involves complex logistics and coordination. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) works with its implementing partners, such as NGOs Islamic Relief and Adventist Development and Relief Agency International (ADRA), to ensure fair distribution and maximum outreach to displaced families, including 60,000 children under five.
